As a child, my single-parent mother would leave a stack of comic books to keep me occupied whilst she went to work. Those comics were a large part of my education. They helped me to read, to draw, to see imagined worlds come to life. Through their influence, I found myself able to relate to the world in ways few others seldom could or, indeed, would.
Now, the world seems to have caught up, with most of today’s hit movies springing forth from the pages of one comic book or another. And rightly so.
As once stated by the late, great Stan Lee, comic books are a medium of communication every bit as important as television or motion pictures. All three employ words and pictures. All three are judged on their individual merits. And this is why the cross-over between genres is so important, so relevant, because a story is a story, whether presented between two covers or on a screen.
If the words, spoken or read, have dramatic impact; if the pictures, moving or still, are visually appealing; if the content is emotionally relevant, then certainly the story should be worthy of everyone’s attention. However, if the quality is lacking, then surely it must rate little consideration. This is, indeed, true for every form of communication but the standards MUST be held higher for a medium in which a picture tells a thousand words.
